Protect Your Joints
Follow these suggestions to help protect your joints and help reduce arthritis pain:

  • Listen to your body and stop any activity that causes sudden, excessive pain. This may be a signal that you are overexerting yourself.
  • Use good posture. Don’t slouch when standing or sitting in a chair. When sitting, keep your legs uncrossed and feet flat on the floor. When standing, keep your feet hip-width apart and distribute your body weight evenly on both feet.
  • Don’t stay in one position too long. If you work at a computer or desk, get up and walk around or stretch every half hour or so. Don’t stand too long, either. This can put stress on your knees and hips.
  • Avoid high-heels. Half-inch heels or flats cause less stress on your knees when you walk.
  • Use larger joints and muscles to carry loads. For example, carry a purse on your shoulder instead of with your fingers. Don’t bend at the waist or hip to pick up something from the floor – bend at the knees instead. When carrying a heavy object hold it close to your body.
  • Use assistive devices. Long-handled reachers, padded cooking utensils and other tools can help you with everyday tasks. These can be found in some pharmacies, medical supply stores and online. Braces may help support weak joints during some activities and when you are in pain.
